New Year New Me

So as a new year dawns and the Christmas decorations come down, we find ourselves presented with a fresh start and blank canvas to enable us to grow into ‘a new me’. Whilst at first the commitment is there in the form of new year’s resolutions, sadly evidence suggests that by the beginning of February, 88% of people will have abandoned their goals set on 1st January and reverted to their old ways of being.

So why is it so difficult to stick to new year’s resolutions and bring about the personal change that may be much needed? The reasons are complicated and, on the surface, appear as vague feelings of resistance or avoidance. Whilst in the past, avoidance may have served us well in the short term as a defence against difficult feelings, it’s usefulness declines over time. In the present it becomes counterproductive and prevents us from moving forward, even when we’re presented with clear evidence that our well-being is being sabotaged.

Unfortunately, much of this is out of our awareness and is just there as a vague feeling of being ‘stuck’. This is where DRCS self-funded therapy can really help as it provides a safe, supportive space in which to reflect to understand how your past experience is related to your present life and behaviours. Many clients report their surprise about the depth of what gets revealed and armed with this knowledge it enables a much more targeted, structured and realistic approach to achieving resolutions.

Far from being the scary, out of reach prospect that was envisaged, personal growth can positively impact mental well-being, increasing self-esteem and decreasing psychological distress. Significantly, working with a therapist challenges one of the main reasons that resolutions fail: they are simply too big and too complex for any individual to tackle unsupported.
